CHAPTER

NETWORK LIKE A HUSTLER
Professional networking is an art that a lot of people take for granted as they build their personal brand, but it’s one of the best ways to market and sell yourself into a new job, internship, or business partnership. According to a 2016 survey by consulting firm The Adler Group, around 85 percent of open positions are filled through networking.
Networking is truly worth your time and effort, but some people get overwhelmed at the thought of how to go about it. Earlier in my career, I loved talking to people everywhere I went, so networking came naturally to me. I guess you could say I have a BIG PERSONALITY. I know everyone does not have my personality, but there are ways you can network like a hustler without changing who you are. Networking should not feel like a task; it should start to get easier even as you get out of your comfort zone.
As you build your career blueprint, plan to be in career spaces and rooms to network with industry leaders, recruiters, and professionals. Most of the time, your career connections are the key to going to the next level in your career. Most professionals are promoted or offered a new job because they already knew someone or they met someone at a professional event: a workshop, happy hour, training class, conference, or party. Networking with new people should always feel casual and never forced, but it is always strategic. As a cool geek, corporate rebel, or career dropout, you should always be thinking ahead about how you can add value to your new career connections or how they can add value to your career. Networking is not a one-way street; it’s not all about how you can benefit. Career networking should be more about how you can learn something new from someone or how you can teach them something new. In this chapter, you will learn to navigate networking challenges with a hustler mindset. You will also learn to create your own networking rhythm by identifying what environments you thrive in. By being an active listener when you meet new people, you can see how you can add value to each other’s careers. Hustlers network with people they can help, and who can help them build a solid personal brand in return.
